In the early 19th century and before then, few formal charitable organizations existed to help people in need. In the first few decades of the 20th century, several volunteer organizations were founded. After World War II, the passion of volunteers to help others shifted focus to other areas, including helping the poor and volunteering overseas. When President Lyndon B. Johnson declared a "War on Poverty" in 1964, new volunteer organizations formed to help the poor.

Over the next few decades, volunteer opportunities continued to expand and the process for finding volunteer work became more formalized, with more volunteer centers forming and new ways to find volunteer work appearing on the World Wide Web. Today, volunteers help with a variety of organizations, including religious, health, social service, arts, sports, political, educational etc

In Kenya; Kenya Voluntary and Community Development Project (KVCDP) has stepped in to respond to many challenges facing urban and rural communities in the country. Kenya is one of the most culturally rich countries in Africa with a beautiful blend of several different cultures and ethnic groups living together. 75% of the population is subsistence farmers who grow crops and rear animals to feed themselves and their families. Unpredictable climatic conditions sometimes lead to crop failure contributing to poverty. Additionally; the country battles with other challenges including: empowerment and participation, employment creation, health, education and training, crime and drugs, leisure, recreation and community service, youth and environment, information and communication technology, youth with special needs and access to financial resources among other challenges.

The establishment of Kenya Voluntary and Community Development Project (KVCDP) in 2010 has widened the volunteer placement opportunities in Kenya providing both local and international volunteers with wonderful opportunities to solve some of the social, economical and political challenges facing the country today through voluntary work.

2012 saw KVCDP welcomes over 100 volunteers into its projects in the country. This year (2013) the organization seeks to include more volunteers worldwide to participate in its growing projects in Health, Education, Livelihoods and Environmental sectors.
